What we have done together with Plan International in Freetown, Moyamba, Kailahun, Portloko, Bombali and with DCI Holland in Bo and Kenema is establish and build the capacity of youth advocacy network. In each of the districts mentioned above, we have brought different children/youth groups together to form a coalition called Children and Youth advisory Board and all the district CAYBs form a national executive called National Children and Youth Advisory Board. We have trained them to do advocacy, peer education, life skills and child participation within the framework of national policies. We support them to do their own campaigns and also participate in decision making processes in their districts and communities. Now the Government has become conscious of involving children/youths and seeking their opinions when making policies, but they don’t train them to be able to do informed and quality participation. So as NGOs, we try to fill this gap and make them ready to participate at all times. Kabala is one area that is quite isolated and do not have children/youths who are as exposed as those in the bigger towns. Most NGOs working there are also more engaged in service provision such as building schools, water well etc. They don’t have organisations that are quite strong in advocacy including child participation approach. So the children/youth in Kabala are weak in this area.

I am thinking that we should set up the same group in Kabala so that they can meaningfully participate in the following processes:

Constitutional review- The Constitutional review committee that government has set up will soon be going round the district to hold consultations. We need to prepare the Kabala children as well to be able to participate in this process as children in other districts

Anti- Ebola campaign- Though Ebola outbreak is not yet in kabala, the fact that Koinadugu district/Kabala shares border with Guinea where the outbreak started makes Kabala vulnerable

If you have other ideas, you can also share. Can you please let me know how much maximum we can target? This can inform the kinds of activities and the scope of the project.

Zo startte de communicatie met Defence for Children halverwege 2014.
Vlak daarvoor was onze vraag aan Angelique Zonneveld Sierra Leone deskundige bij Cordaid, of zij niet een project in het noorden van Sierra Leone, Koinadugu district wist dat we konden ondersteunen, een project dat aansloot bij onze visie. Angelique heeft goede ervaringen met Defence for Children in Sierra Leone en kent Abdul Manaff Kemokai de directeur.
We kozen voor Koinadugu district met Kabala als hoofdstad omdat Kelly Fofonah een van onze bestuurleden daar opgegroeid is. Als stichting geeft ons dat vele voordelen; Kelly kent het gebied op zijn duimpje en weet van de cultuur en gebruiken. Door de jaren heen hebben we als stichting veel geleerd over deze gebruiken maar Kelly die er 15 jaar heeft gewoond, voelt vaak precies aan hoe de mensen daar denken en voelen. Die verschillen met de Europese gebruken en denkwijzen zijn groot maar als je je in de achtergronden hiervan verdiept verrijkt dat je leven en bekijk je het leven ook eens van een andere kant.

Bovenstaande brief beschrijft het avontuur waarop we volmondig ja hebben gezegd.

In oktober 2014 werd het project voor het eerste jaar aangemeld bij de Landelijke Vastenaktie en in december 2014 volgde de goedkeuring.
Dit betekent dat de Landelijke Vastenaktie het bedrag dat wij ophalen voor Defence for Children met 50% zal verhogen.
In maart 2015 ontvangt Defence for Children alvast een voorschot zodat ze dan kunnen beginnen.

De Vastenaktie van 2015 loopt van 18 februari tot 5 april.

Kabala youth project

Samira Halloway
gaat het nieuwe Defence for Children Project in Kabala opzetten.

We vroegen Samira iets over haarzelf op te schrijven en zie hier het indrukwekkende resultaat.

Samira is geboren in 1986 in Moyamba district, komt uit een Christelijk gezin met 2 kinderen.
Opleiding:
Primary School at the King Harman Preparatory School
Secondary School at the Saint Joseph’s Secondary School in Freetown.
Diplom in business administration and management at the EMIBEX college of management and accounting.
Presently pursueing a bachelors degree in community development studies at the college of theology and management.
Ervaring:
Worked under child protection for eight years.
Volunteered in UNICEF in 2008 in doing research on child abuse and violence in Moyamba, Kailahun and Kabala district.
Volunteered in Safe the Children SL 2010 under the child right coalition.
Worked at DCI-SL under the girl power project.
Vrije tijd:
Helps school going children with their home work at my neighbourhood.
Teaches at the children”s sunday school every sunday.
In my quiet moments I read books and listen to all types of music.
Update: in Januari 2017 she became her Bachelors Degree in Community Development Studies.
