Afgelopen zaterdag had ik weer eens whatsapp contact met Sajor van 22 en lid van onze groep. Hij was onderweg naar het veld om te werken, een heel andere activiteit dan mijn zonen van 16 en 22 jaar op een zaterdag uitvoeren. Ik vroeg hem of hij een kort verslag kon geven van wat hij die dag deed aangevuld met een paar foto’s.

I am presently walking to the farm we have lots of work there today. The distance from our farm to kabala is 3 mile we spend an hour walking.
What do you have to do and what is on the farm, cassava?
We have to construct heaps, slash the weeds, cultivate cassava, potatoes, rice and yam.
And who is going to guard the farm when you r not there?
We guide it our selves, some time we sleep there when we suspect thieves and when pests wants to cause disturbances on the crops. Presently we are climbing a hill, me and the cook. She is tired.

The road is poor. The place is called Kayankula, it is really difficult to farm there because one has to fence if you want to get good yield. All the people I am working with today are illiterate.
What s her name?
Her name is Adama, but she cannot speak Krio well, she speak Limba. I asked her why her parents did not sent her to school, she said she regret it not being in school, but she will try very hard to educate her children.
How old is she? Do you speak Limba?
I cannot speak Limba so fluently but I can understand when some one speak, I know what she means.
She is 18, and have one son. Her parents give her to marry at age 16, to a 24 year guy (vaak gebeurt dit omdat ouders geen geld meer hebben om hun kinderen te eten te geven. De man/ jongen waarmee ze trouwen is dan verantwoordelijk voor de vrouw/ het meisje). Her child is one year eight months old.

We are close to the farm for work, all the other men leave us behind they don’t feel sorry for women, when they are going to the farm they leave all they women behind unless I wait for her today other wise she alone had to go.

Later praat ik over dit gesprek met Kelly. Hij legt uit dat mensen voor een boer op de farm gaan werken. In ruil daarvoor krijgen ze die dag eten en drinken. Er gaat ook altijd een kok mee die dan met de ingredienten die de boer levert een maaltijd maakt. Soms wordt er palmwijn geschonken. Voor meer informatie over palmwijn zie onze facebook pagina.
