REPORTS FROM THE YOUTH ADVOCACY NETWORK ON FIELD MONITORING AT KOINDEMBAIA

YAN had a monitoring at Koindembaia.The purpose of the visit was to see how our previous activity have created an impact on the people.Whether it is a negative impact or positive.

The meeting was chaired by Mohammed D Turay. The meeting started with prayers, introduction of members and the community stakeholders.Then Next was purpose of the visit.The President said the purpose of the visit is on monitoring and to ask the people what are their problem so that YAN can Advocate on their behalf on issuing that is affecting then.
Paramount Chief
The representative from the Paramount chief said he is happy that YAN is working in their chief dom and they are always ready to welcome YAN because of the changes YAN have created especially in the reduction of teenage pregnancy.

Teachers
One of the teachers said, they want to thank YAN for the advocacy they have done but still they are some things that they need in school.The things he highlighted was
1.Blackboard
2.Slates
3.Text books
4.Inadequate buildings

A representative from the pupils of the school.He said presently their school is lacking water facility not only the school but the whole village.He also mentioned about the recreational materials they lack in School.Even toilet facility is lacking in the school.
Principal
The principal of the school said,due to the activity of YAN in October 11,2017.
There is a mass reduction of teenage pregnancy and child marriage.He said the cases he used to record in the past years is far greater than as it is now.He advised YAN to continue doing this good work

Head Master
The head Master of the primary school said he have more than 345 Pupils in his school.But the problem he is facing is that, school buildings, text books, toilets facility,water facility is the greatest need the school need now.He also continued to say that,water facility is not only need by school but the community as a whole
Presentation of gifts
During the Presentation of gifts, Sajor said he has heard all the needs of the people.YAN is going to carried the messages to the institution, individuals for immediate response.He thanked the boys, girls and community people for their fight against any forms of child abuse.The President presented the gifts on behalf of the group.During the presentation of the gift,he admonished all the pupils to make use of the gift.Vote of thanks was done by one of the elders of the community.

17 mei 2018 Bezoek aan Semamaya Village

Op 17 mei bracht YAN een bezoek aan Semamaya Village. In februari van het vorig jaar hebben wij dit dorp tijdens onze reis ook bezocht en er viel toen al op dat er weinig kinderen naar school gingen. Het dorp ligt 1 uur rijden vanaf Kabala op een berg in de bush. Je moet ver lopen om water te halen en er is grote armoede. Sommige bewoners zijn het dorp hun hele leven nog niet uit geweest. In het dorp wordt Limba gesproken. Gelukkig is er een tolk die het een en ander kan vertalen. In het dorp is een kleine basisschool die gebouwd  door een familie naar aanleiding van de begrafenis van een jonge Italiaanse vrouw. Haar foto hangt in het kantoor aan de muur.

Twee maanden geleden is Amadu Wurie, de secretaris naar het dorp gegaan om te kijken hoe het ging en wat bleek, er was geen enkel kind op school. Er was feest in het dorp. De aanleiding: jonge meisjes waren besneden en werden uitgehuwelijkt.
Maar YAN laat zich niet uit het veld slaan en brengt dus nu weer een bezoek aan het dorp om met de dorpsoudsten en leraren te praten hoe de situatie te verbeteren en wat er nodig is om de kinderen naar school te sturen. YAN realiseert zich goed dat dit een kwestie is van lange adem; eeuwenlange en vastgeroeste tradities kun je niet zo maar door breken maar ze zeggen ook, je moet ergens beginnen.

Door middel van foto’s en commentaar zullen we verslag doen van het bezoek ter voorbereiding en de dag zelf.

Er is eten meegebracht en er wordt samen gekookt en gegeten, mannen, vrouwen en kinderen apart.

Onder de cottontree is de samenkomst.
Iedereen wordt voorgesteld en er is een gemeenschappelijk gebed. Isata Samura mag deze dag voorzitter zijn. Het doel van het bezoek wordt uitgelegd en verschillende mensen krijgen de kans om te reageren op wat gezegd wordt. Een en ander is mooi terug te vinden in het verslag van Amadu Wurie de secretaris. Dit verslag wordt aangeboden aan de lokale autoriteiten. Zij hebben interesse getoond in wat de bevindingen van YAN zijn. YAN is een advocacy, rechten en bemiddelingsgroep. Alhoewel deze groep nog erg jong is beginnen zij zich aardig te roeren voor de (nog) kwetsbaren in hun district!

Er zijn, na het uithuwelijken van de meisjes vooral jonge kinderen in de schoolbanken te zien.

En dan is het zover. De laatste voorbereidingen: koken voor de genodigden, de meubels nog even poetsen en dan kan het feest beginnen.

 

Iedereen is op z’n mooist gekleed en wil wel poseren voor de camera.

Gezamelijk gebed, Christenen en Moslims. Hierom is Sierra Leone bekend: de verdraagzaamheid tussen de godsdiensten, respect voor ieders eigen invulling.

03-05-2018 Opening Kantoor voor YAN

Owen Jones bekijkt het kantoor

Tijdens ons bezoek in januari is er uitgebreid gesproken over een lang gekoesterde wens van de jongeren: een eigen ruimte voor YAN. Uiteindelijk is er een kantoor gevonden met een zaal om te vergaderen en een ruimte om te studeren. Meubels werden besteld en gemaakt door een broer van Bangalie: een conferentietafel, 30 stoelen, 2 bureau’s en 6 bureaustoelen.
En nu is het zover: de meubels zijn klaar, het kantoor is gepoetst en de uitnodigingen voor de opening worden verstuurd.

Deze week is er even een pauzeweek van

de examens  dus tijd voor een feestelijke opening!

February 2018 Paper about the right to education for girls and a visit to the mining zone

Vorige week werd Marie-José gevraagd om als voorbereiding op een paper van een rechtenstudente de volgende vraag te beantwoorden:
What are the current obstacles for girls regarding the right to education in Sierra Leone?
Het antwoord:
Although in Sierra Leone there are  a lot of laws that should provide in education for women and girls, in daily life it really is a privilege to go to school. Sierra Leone is still suffering from a devastating war at the end of the last century. There is a lack of good qualified  teachers and you still can see school buildings that are destroyed. In addition in 2014 schools were closed for almost a year because of the Ebola outbreak. So going to school is not a constant factor in the lives of children.
Poverty is widespread and families will send rather a boy to school then a girl but the fact is that in some families even the boys can not attend school because they have to work to earn some money.
Childmarriage and teenage pregnancy are still widespread probably because in certain communities the idea rules that as soon as girls get breasts they are ready for marriage and to get pregnant. Also female gender mutilation is still a common practice often at young age.
Later in de week bracht een van de YAN een bezoek aan de mijnen in de buurt van Lake Sonfon.
Het bevestigt wat er in de vraag heb geprobeerd samen te vatten.

Hello YAN members, this is what I saw today in a mining zone, see how children are used in the mines, instead of sending them to school or to learn something else. It is really pathetic, more especially for the girls, so as a group we have to under take a tour to this mining zone, to talk to the steak holders and the parents. As we did at semmaya village and we succeeded.
I interviewed one of the girls Kumba Koroma and asked her why are you not going to school instead living in the mines. She answered:
” I had wanted to attend school but my parents insisted, because they think education is expensive in this country, so they prefer I stay with them in the mines till my breast are mature then they can send me to marriage ”
